Drawing the Human Head for Portraits

October 3

Class:

6 hour workshop $100.
Non refundable deposit to hold your seat $25.

In this workshop we will cover the basics of drawing the human head based on the Andrew Loomis method.

This includes:

• How to measure and establish the lines of the head

• The planes of the head

• Perspective

• Different types of heads

• Placement of mouth, eyes, lips and ears

• Light and shadow

The first part of the class will be for basic understanding of how to draw the head. This method helps if you are drawing from life. We will draw, together, starting with a sphere, angles, and lines. We will establish where the features go on our drawing.

The second part of the class we will be sketching a portrait together from a photo I will provide. Each of you will have the same, very simple photo. I will show you different ways to get the likeness onto your paper.

We will cover how light and shadow help define the portrait.

You will be provided with sketch paper. You may bring your own sketch paper if you like.

I recommend you bring:

• Vine charcoal

• Charcoal pencil

• A regular pencil

• An Atomus Eyebrow Stencil Ruler (I know, it’s weird, but it does help when measuring features)

There are other measuring tools available but this, for me, works really well.

• Gum eraser

These can all be purchased on Amazon or at Allard’s.

You will need materials required for Oil Painting that include:  brushes, palette, paints, canvas boards (panels) and solvent. I recommend you purchase at Allard’s Art Supplies as they have all the materials you will need for class.
